H2 Readiness
Within the H2 Readiness project, a roadmap for a dedicated hydrogen grid and a H2 blending strategy for Austria will be developed.
The roadmap and the blending strategy will be based on a sound as-is analysis of the hydrogen compatibility of the gas grid and the storage facilities, and will be carried out according to technical and economic aspects. The implementation of this project will be done in 3 phases:
Phase 1: Survey of the H2 readiness of the network and the storage facilities.
In this phase, components installed in the gas network will be surveyed and evaluated for their hydrogen compatibility. In general, a share of 10%, 20% and 100% hydrogen will be evaluated. Furthermore, a cost estimate for possible necessary retrofits of the networks and the storage facilities will be carried out.
Phase 2: Roadmap for a H2-grid
The goal of the roadmap for a dedicated hydrogen network is to design the development of a hydrogen network. It should be able to meet the future hydrogen demands of the end customers and transports to and from the storage facilities.
A concept for a hydrogen network has already been elaborated. The existing gas grid was divided into 2 grids, a dedicated H2 grid and a CH4 grid. The dedicated H2 grid is able to serve the future demands of the end customers under all possible feed-in scenarios. The remaining CH4 grid can supply end customers with a total capacity of 22 GW.
The concept was presented at the AGID on November 8, 2021.
Result of the hydrogen query 2022
The calculations for the roadmap are based on the survey of the future hydrogen requirements of industry in Austria, which was carried out in the spring of this year. For this purpose, a questionnaire was prepared by AGGM, which was sent via the network operators to their major customers. The survey showed a clear interest for hydrogen in the Austrian industry and a necessary development of a hydrogen infrastructure in the coming years. The complete report and the results of the survey can be found here.

Phase 3: Development of a blending strategy
The development of the blending strategy is to determine the feasibility of blending hydrogen into the CH4 grid. The goal is to develop optimal injection points and electrolysis sites.
